Senator Mark Kirk announced Tuesday April 2, 2013 that he supported gay marriage. He came to this view when his son came out and said he was a homosexual. What makes this so interesting to everyone is that Senator Mark Kirk is a Republican Senator from the state of Illinois. This is interesting because the typical view of Republicans is to oppose gay marriage. They have always had the view that marriage is between a man and a woman and since it is printed in the Bible, it is the only way.
Kirk is the second republican in the Senate to show their support for gay marriage. Republican Senator John Portman of Ohio became the first republican to do so. There have only been 7 of the 55 democratic Senators in office now who have not shown their support for gay rights and do not support gay marriage.
I am a Republican and I do not support the act of gay marriage. I do not have a problem with homosexual people having a relationship if they love one another, however there is no need for them to have the right to marry and receive the same benefits that traditional heterosexual married partners receive.
