U.S. gas prices down 32 cents from 2012 peak

The United States has seen many increases and decreases in the price of gas and oil over the past few years. At one point the gas was up to almost five dollars a gallon in some places, including my state of North Carolina. This was a few years ago. This time last year the average cost for a gallon of gas was $3.97. This year it is $3.65. The highest price was in Chicago at $4.05 and the lowest in Montana at $3.33.

Over the past year, the United States has been able to find more, cheaper oil refineries in the US and Canada to drill into. This is why the price of oil has dropped and that causes the price of gasoline to drop too. I can only hope we will continue to find more places to drill and get cheap gas.

At the same time we do need to continue our research on the next best thing to use as fuel. We need to think about biodiesel, using corn as our next source of fuel, ethanol, as well as electricity. These are all being researched now and eventually, I’m afraid, our oil wells will run dry and we will have to turn to one of these as a main energy source.
