Airline ‘fat tax’: Should heavy passengers pay more?

An economics scholar from Norway, Dr. Bharat P. Bhatta, has proposed a plan that would charge passengers on airlines different amounts based upon what they weigh. This weight would include both their size and their luggage. There have been three different plans; total weight, base fare +/- extra, and high/average/low. The last of the three seems to be the most popular which would have people and baggage who weigh over or under a certain weight paying a fee certain fee and people who weigh between the two marks paying a certain fee.

This has been drawn up because a study was shown that for every kilo of weight dropped off the plane it saves close to $3,000 a year in fuel and about the same in CO2 emissions. This would provide benefits to passengers, airlines as well as the rest of society.

I completely agree with this statement because a lot of times when obese people fly they sit in the seat and it ends up interfering with the person next to them. If they were to have to book 2 seats or pay an extra fee to fly then it might deter them from flying or it may encourage them to drop their weight if they fly a lot.
